Hundreds of participants turned out on June 18, 2004 to help raise funds for children and families who face injury and illness at Baptist Hospital East, and to celebrate one very special life.
The second Buddies for Life golf scramble and auction, held at Oldham County Country Club and the John W. Black Community Center, raised more than $28,000 for pediatric programs at Baptist East.
"I think everything was wonderful and everyone had a good time. I was so surprised that we had so many people come back again this year to participate, and we saw a lot of new faces this year as well," said Lori Kincaid, Fund Development director. Kincaid headed a committee to organize the event.
More than 160 golfers participated in the scramble. One golfer barely missed winning the hole-in-one contest and a lease on a Ford F-150 truck.
"He was only 18-inches from the hole. That was pretty exciting," Kincaid said.
A silent auction, live auction, dinner and awards presentation was held later in the evening at the community center. The auction committee gathered more than 120 items.
"We had twice as many items this year. The committee did a fabulous job of organizing the auction and getting items donated," she said.
The auction committee included Karen Aubrey, Mary Beth Belza, Cara Boone, Michele Feger, Peggy Karman, Kincaid, Caroline Knop, David and Donna Long, Chip Sprigg, Michael Stairs, Mary Anne Watkins, Carolyn Wetterer and Rose Wetterer.
Buddies for Life was established by David and Donna Long to celebrate the life of their daughter Maria, who lost her battle with an inoperable brain tumor and was a patient in the Pediatric Unit at Baptist East. Funds raised by this annual event will go into an endowment fund. In just two years, the golf scramble and auction has raised nearly $60,000.
