At Baptist Hospital East, our first priority for patients who have been hospitalized due to an injury or illness is to help them return to their normal daily activities. Whether affected by a neurological or orthopedic disorder -- such as stroke, brain injury, amputation or hip fracture -- the staff at Baptist East’s Rehabilitation Unit has the experience and knowledge to help patients improve as they recover from their hospital stay.
Patients consistently rank the Rehabilitation Unit among the top for patient satisfaction.
The Rehabilitation Unit consistently ranks among the top 10 percent in the nation for patient satisfaction,* with more than 90 percent of patients rating their overall rehab experience as "excellent" or "very good" on satisfaction surveys. One reason patients rate Baptist East so highly is for the personalized care they receive.
The program’s 29-bed inpatient unit and outpatient services are housed on one floor, which is connected to the main hospital by pedway. Patients are nearby to the caregivers, who can respond quickly to their individualized needs. The smaller unit size also provides an intimate setting where patients receive the personal attention they need during their recovery.
In addition, Baptist East’s Rehabilitation Unit is one of a handful of area facilities that provides one-on-one therapy (rather than group therapy), allowing patients to progress at their own pace with a program custom-made for their needs.
Following rehabilitation, more of our patients are well enough to return home, rather than to a nursing home or other long-term care facility.
Among rehabilitation facilities nationwide, an average of 76 percent of patients are able to return home after their stay, instead of to a nursing home or other long-term care facility. At Baptist East, 85 percent of rehabilitation patients come home to the comfort of family, friends and familiar surroundings.
In addition to the skilled staff and supportive environment found at Baptist East, rehabilitation patients benefit from the involvement of those closest to them ... members of their family. Because that family support and involvement is vital throughout the patients’ stay, family teaching is scheduled regularly. In addition, many of our patients’ treatment goals include special outings -- allowing patients and families to practice skills in the community -- as well as "home passes" that allow patients to spend time at home readjusting to their environment and smoothing their transition.
Baptist East continues to reach out to patients even after they’ve returned home, by offering support groups geared to their special needs, including brain injury and stroke recovery. In addition, the Rehabilitation team is just a phone call away if patients or family members have questions about their care. To reach the Rehabilitation Unit, please call (502) 896-7431.
