Using advanced equipment, physicians at Baptist Hospital East can diagnose many different types of cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), spiral CT scanning, nuclear medicine, mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound and prostate ultrasound help physicians locate cancerous cells and determine whether they have spread. Physicians can also look closely inside the body for tissue samples containing cancerous cells using a non-surgical procedure called endoscopy. This is one of the best ways to diagnose the presence of cancer cells early, leading to more effective treatment.
Mammography, breast ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsy are used to evaluate breast lumps. Nine out of 10 breast lumps are not cancerous, but early diagnosis is crucial in the treatment of breast cancer. Baptist Hospital East's Women's Imaging Services area is dedicated to providing these services with its own separate waiting area, private exam rooms and staffing by experienced female technologists.
