Multiple Sclerosis Center

Baptist Hospital East began offering a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center in August 1996. Headed by a neurologist (a physician who specializes in problems with the nervous system), the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Baptist East meets on Wednesdays from 8-11:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of the hospital's 4002 Building, on the Rehabilitation Unit.

The center is specifically designed to provide evaluation, consultation and follow-up services to patients with MS who are newly diagnosed or want a second opinion on their diagnosis.

Services provided include:

  • Diagnostic tests such as MRI
  • Rehabilitative evaluation and services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to help patients regain mobility and self-care skills, and overcome speech or swallowing problems
  • Assistance with cognitive (thinking) problems
  • Prescription medications to alleviate symptoms and help reduce the severity and duration of acute attacks, and newer drugs which have been shown to reduce progression or long-term disability in patients with MS.
  • Access to exercise classes especially for MS patients.

A volunteer representative from the Kentucky-Southeast Indiana Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is available to help provide support and education to patients and their families, as well as acquaint them with the services offered through the society.
