Baptist Hospital East is very active in its community, contributing more than more than $5 million in community benefits in fiscal year 2006 alone, including charity care, service projects, cash and in-kind donations and employee salaries to participate in community projects.
Part of the hospital’s mission statement is to improve the health of the community it serves. To achieve that goal on a large scale, the hospital partnered with Milestone Fitness to open the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center which grew by 20 percent in 2005 after only four years of operation.
Baptist East also touches community members at a very personal level. Hospital staff participated in more than 100 health fairs in 2006, reaching about 21,297people with such services as free blood pressure checks, body fat analysis, pulse oximetry, glucose testing and other health screenings. Baptist East participated in eight community events that touched 8,433 people.
Twenty wellness programs drew nearly 1,200 persons to learn how to better care for themselves and their families. Maternity classes – plus classes for such conditions as diabetes – were offered free to some 10,000 people in 2006.
And, for the hurting, Baptist East offered nearly a dozen support groups and directly aided more than 1,400 people.
The hospital’s Employee Activities Committee has sponsored such community outreach efforts as drives for Hurricane Katrina victims, plus Adopt-A-Deer efforts to assist fellow employees at Christmas. Youngsters in the Child Development Center even participated in Operation Shoebox to bring Christmas cheer to children in far away countries.
Employees are very active in health-related organizations and fundraising efforts for such activities as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, American Heart Association Heart Walk, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and many others.
In 2005, and again in 2006, Baptist East was one of 14 finalists in the large business category of the Republic Bank "We Care" Awards. The awards recognized companies that encourage their employees to become involved in volunteer community activities.
