Access Center

The Access Center serves as an assessment center for all patients coming to Baptist Hospital East with psychiatric issues. The center is staffed 24/7 with nurses and intake coordinators. In addition, the center is staffed during peak hours with a Center for Behavioral Health therapist. Access Center staff assess individuals who present in the center with a request for evaluation of appropriate level of care. In addition, center staff complete assessments in the Emergency Department, and throughout the hospital as needed.

Ambulatory Care (ACU)

The 11-bed unit accommodates approximately 30 patients per day. Hours of operation are 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Scheduled appointments only. A sampling of procedures performed include intravenous medications, blood transfusions, injections, PICC line placement, minor surgery under local anesthesia, phlebotomies, ultrasound Bx of prostate, lumbar punctures, paracentesis, thoracentesis and venous access maintenance.

Cardiovascular Unit

This 12-bed unit is the newest telemetry unit, located in the Cardiac Care Center. It focuses on cardiac surgical patients directly following their recovery phase in the Open Heart Unit. The staff cares for the patient through the post-op phase until discharge. ACLS required.

Coronary Care Unit (CCU)

Coronary Care Unit (CCU). This is a 16-bed medical/surgical intensive care unit specializing in cardiac care. Care is provided to young adults through geriatric patients. There is a 1:2 nurse/patient ratio in order to provide quality care. The unit cares for balloon pumps and CRRT patients. CCU offers many opportunities for learning. The unit accepts applications from new graduates, medical/surgical nurses, transitional nurses and critical care nurses. Orientation is based upon the educational needs of the individual. The hospital provides on-site critical care classes and ACLS training. This unit self-schedules and works every third weekend.

Crisis Management Unit

The Crisis Management Unit (CMU) is a 22-bed general psychiatric unit treating patients with varied psychiatric diagnoses, using a multidisciplinary team approach. CMU is designed for the adult psychiatric patient who is in immediate need of crisis intervention. Intensive care is provided for the acutely ill psychiatric patient. Group therapy, classes, and activities are provided to assist patients in progress toward discharge. ECT treatments are available for both inpatients and outpatients if needed. 

Emergency Department (ED)

With 28 beds in the main ED, five beds in the Pediatric ED and nine beds in the Chest Pain Observation Unit, this fast-paced ED treats an average of 150 patients a day. Types of cases include acute cardiovascular and neurovascular emergencies, general medical emergencies, traumatic injuries and psychiatric patients. Ages of those treated range from neonates to geriatrics. An extensive orientation program allows the emergency nurse to work autonomously with a wide range of clinical specialties in treating emergency patients and families. The ED fosters high levels of teamwork and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary group of professionals. New graduates with appropriate training and background are welcomed.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy features 10 treatment rooms and 30 pre- and post-operative procedure rooms. A high-tech endoscopic retrograde colangio pancreatography (ERCP) room is available. This department provides inpatient and outpatient services. Nurses and endoscopy technicians work together to provide care to patients receiving flexible endoscopic procedures. Nurses perform moderate sedation and hemodynamic monitoring.

Home Health Agency

Extensive services are provided to patients in need of nursing care in the community. Baptist Hospital East Home Health Agency serves Jefferson, Oldham, Spencer, Shelby, Henry, Bullitt, and Trimble counties. Nursing care includes diabetic services, IV therapy, wound care, medical/surgical care and patient/family teaching to manage the patient's disease process(es) and medications. Other nursing specialties are mental health and enterostomal therapy. Patient populations range from adolescent to geriatric. High job satisfaction is related to the flexibility and autonomy with providing "hands-on" primary nursing care.

Intensive Care Unit (Medical/Surgical)

On this 18-bed unit, intensive care is provided to medical, surgical and neurological patients. The unit educator works with the RN and ancillary staff to provide thorough orientation. The orientation of the new employee varies according to experience. New graduates, medical/surgical nurses, step-down unit nurses and critical care nurses accepted. A critical care class, dysrhythmia class and ACLS certification are offered at the hospital. The patient population varies from young adult through geriatric. The unit self-schedules, working every third weekend. A staff newsletter and monthly educational in-services are provided.

Labor & Delivery

This unit has 14 Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, six antepartum rooms, two procedure rooms, three operating rooms and three recovery beds. The newly expanded facilities have a dedicated patient entrance in the Baptist East Medical Pavilion. The unit averages about 3,000 deliveries a year. The nurses function with independence and efficiency within all areas of L&D. Extensive orientation and supportive co-workers within an autonomous unit allow the community reputation of this area to remain at a level of excellence. NRP certification is required.

Medical/Surgical Unit (6 South)

This 32-bed unit has a fast-paced environment treating post-operative patients and medical/surgical patients. Primary diagnoses of patients are pneumonia, abdominal pain and urosepsis. This unit uses the care partner/patient care delivery model. New graduates are welcomed.

Medical/Surgical Unit (6 North)

This 32-bed fast-paced unit cares for patients who present with a diversity of diagnoses ranging from pneumonia to complex abdominal surgeries. We offer an excellent preceptorship for new grads interested in the medical/surgical experience.

Mother/Baby Unit

Two 20-bed postpartum units with all-private rooms plus a newborn nursery and four-bed Level II nursery. Mother/Baby nurses care for moms and their babies as units. During the night, nurses are assigned to moms and babies separately. Nursery nurses attend deliveries, do initial assessments, and provide total care for the Level II babies. Lactation consultants are available for patient and staff teaching. New graduates are welcomed.

Neuroscience Unit

The 32-bed Neuroscience unit features eight monitored beds. The unit offers specialized nursing assessment and care to patients with both neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. Typical patients include those with a diagnosis of stroke, post-op craniotomy, post-op discectomy or post-cerebral embolization. Unit nursing care is complemented by expertise of a neuroscience nurse practitioner who also assists in linking the Neuro Unit with the Rehabilitation Unit, and fostering a strong focus on the patient's continuum of care. New graduates are welcomed.

Oncology

This 26-bed medical/surgical Oncology unit is devoted to the holistic care of patients and their families. This challenging environment offers the development of critical thinking skills in the care and administration of chemotherapy, pain management and general cancer nursing. An excellent preceptorship orientation fosters success in the care of these patients and their families. Representation from the following disciplines make up our care team: Medical Oncologist/Hematologist, oncology clinical nurse specialist, oncology nursing staff, chaplain, dietician, social services, certified massage and music therapist. All provide support to the oncology patient and family. New graduates are welcomed.

Open Heart Unit

This six-bed unit, located in the Cardiac Care Center, offers intensive recovery room and critical care services to the immediate post-op cardiac surgery patient. Critical care experience and ACLS requires. Previous OHRR experience preferred.

Operating Room

In the 24 OR suites and two dedicated heart rooms, a full scope of service is provided with the exception of organ transplants. Service lines available are general, gynecological, urological, orthopedics, plastics, ENT, opthalmology, cardiovascular, thoracic, neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. The OR staff prides itself in providing caring and high-technology patient-focused services. The OR also includes a six-bed inpatient holding room.

Orthopedics

This 32-bed unit specializes in orthopedic surgical patients. Because of the unit's success, Baptist Hospital East was named by HCIA as one of the "Top 100 Orthopedic Hospitals." Baptist East performs the highest volume of joint replacement surgeries in the state and maintains a short length of stay. This unit experiences a high daily admission and discharge volume. New graduates are welcomed.

Palliative Care Unit (4 Park)

Palliative Care is a 15-bed all private room acute medical unit that provides palliative care to patients with terminal or chronic illness. In addition, general medical/surgical patients are treated on 4 Park, as well as chemically-dependent patients undergoing acute medical detoxification.

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Phase I

This 28-bed unit offers a full scope of services for the post-operative patient including Pediatric through Adult. This fast-paced unit is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Critical care experience is required, as well as ACLS and PALS.

PACU, Phase II

This 31-bed unit is focused on treating post-operative patients for discharge. Nurses on this unit may care for patients waiting for admission beds after recovery from Phase I. Post-operative care is also provided for cardiac catherization patients. Critical care experience, as well as ACLS and PALS, required.

Pain Management

This unit provides outpatient pain blocks to patients with chronic pain with conscious sedation. Pain management experience preferred. Recovery and surgery experience helpful.

Pre-op Surgery

On this 18-bed unit, nurses care for patients that have come from home for surgery. ACLS is required and Medical/Surgical experience is preferred.

Progressive Care Unit

On this 30-bed unit, tenure of this nursing staff is second to none. With the intensity of patient admissions and discharges, the unit's cohesiveness and teamwork allow the nurse to function successfully on this step-down unit. Patients are admitted onto the unit with diagnoses ranging from congestive heart failure, angina, MI's and/or angioplasty. ACLS required. New graduates are welcomed.

Pre-Admission Testing

Nurses on this eight-bed unit obtain health history and surgical consent, and initiate the database for surgical patients. The nurse coordinates lab, X-ray, EKG and other ordered tests. Perioperative experience is preferred.

Rehabilitation

The nurses on this 29-bed bed unit, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, manage the care of patients with significant medical-, neurological- and orthopedic-related conditions. Patients and their families are afforded the opportunity to learn about their conditions and practice those skills they will need to return home with their loved ones. The staff on Rehab practice from a relationship-based model which focuses on outcomes and functional issues of the patient; teaching being a large component of the care they provide. The patients come to Rehab medically stable, but there is an ongoing need for nurses to practice many of their medical/surgical skills. New graduates with an interest in the field are welcome.

Transitional Care Unit

This is a 32-bed, fast-paced, intermediate-level unit caring for adult and geriatric patients. The primary focus is caring for medical/surgical patients requiring telemetry and patients on home ventilators. The level of care provided includes the treatment of acute as well as chronic disease processes.

Vascular Unit

With 23 monitored beds, it is only one of two such units in the country. This vascular unit provides high-intensive nursing care including arterial lines, Swan Ganz catheters and vasoactive drips to vascular surgery and thoracic surgery patients. Expert care is also provided for medical/surgical patients in this very active, fast-paced post-surgical unit. Patients with carotid, lower extremity bypass, stent procedures and aneurysm repairs, deep vein thrombosis and peripheral vascular disease routinely recover on this unit. Surgical or medical patients are also a part of this patient population. New graduates are welcomed.

Women's Health

This 24-bed all-female patient unit provides care for gynecological, medical/surgical, mastectomy and cosmetic surgical patients. Postpartum patients choosing to place their baby for adoption or those who have experienced a stillbirth or miscarriage may also be placed on this unit. Women's Health has supportive clinical specialists and a Women's Health clinician who is a resource for patients and staff. New graduates are welcomed.
