Many people ask how they can say "thank you" for the care they or a loved one received at Baptist Hospital East. Thank you letters are always welcome, but what better way to honor a special nurse, employee or physician than with a gift in honor and recognition of the care they provided. Or, celebrate the life of a loved one with a gift in their honor or memory.
Through donations to the Baptist Hospital East Foundation, Baptist East provides many programs and services that enhance the quality of care given. Gifts from members of the community allow nurses and other staff members to receive additional education and training. Donations provide for community health screenings that help prevent diseases or detect them earlier; they allow the hospital to offer support groups for patients and their families. Private support from community members helps us make a patients hospital stay a little more comfortable.
The changes in healthcare in the last decade have made it increasingly challenging for Baptist East to rely solely on traditional forms of payment, such as Medicare and managed care, to provide the kind of healing environment our patients want and have come to expect. Despite this, the hospital remains an excellent place to receive care and to work.
To guarantee that this level of excellence continues, Baptist East relies on the generous support of people in the community to provide a margin of excellence.
Often family members and friends want to honor the memory of a loved one or express their appreciation for the care received by making a donation. A memorial gift to the Baptist Hospital East Foundation provides a meaningful symbol of respect, gratitude and love. Memorial and honorary gifts also may be designated to a particular area of the hospital, such as Oncology, Palliative Care or Rehab.
As healthcare changes, so does the way that Baptist East delivers care to patients. Because of the need for flexibility, the hospital must have the ability to respond to areas with the greatest need. Gifts that are not earmarked for a specific area of the hospital can be quickly directed where they are needed most. In this way, Baptist East can remain on the leading edge of patient care.
The ways of giving are many and varied from the simplicity of writing a check to donating appreciated securities or real estate to making a provision that will benefit Baptist East after your death. Some of the most common methods are discussed below. For more information regarding specific gift arrangements, call the Baptist Hospital East Foundation at (502) 896-7495.
Cash gifts, usually in the form of a check, are the most common form of a donation. Provided you itemize your deductions, cash gifts are deductible in the year the gift is made. You may deduct up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income and any excess may be carried forward for the next five tax years.
Giving appreciated securities that have been held longer than one year presents a significant tax advantage. Donors avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities. Those wanting to make a gift of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares should instruct their broker to contact the Baptist Hospital East Foundation for additional information.
Many companies provide matching gifts for their employees and other eligible individuals. This allows your gift to be doubled and sometimes tripled. Please include your companys matching gift form with your gift. To find out if your employer matches donations, contact the companys Human Resources department or call the Baptist Hospital East Foundation.
You may name the Baptist Hospital East Foundation as a beneficiary in your will. Typically, donors provide either a specific amount or a percentage of the estate for the hospitals benefit. The hospital can also be a residual beneficiary of your estate, receiving funds after the payment of bequests to others.
There are a number of charitable arrangements that provide a gift to the hospital and income to you and/or your spouse for life. Often the amount of income is more than can be realized by other conservative investments.
Gifts of real estate that have appreciated in value can provide a significant tax advantage. Donors may deduct the fair market value of the gift up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income with a five-year carry over provision. Additionally, donors do not pay capital gains taxes on the appreciated value of the real estate. Furthermore, you may give your residence to the Baptist Hospital East Foundation and retain residency for your life, the life of your spouse or a set number of years.
The Baptist Hospital East Foundation is pleased to work with donors to determine the best way to make a gift to the hospital, but you are encouraged to consult your own financial advisor before finalizing a gift.
